Itchybald Scratchet (Itchy) is a badger who lives quietly with his wife Matty in a sett in Badgers Wood. He goes quietly about foraging for food daily, weather permitting, while Matty keeps their sett clean and tidy, it’s her pride and joy.
While out one day foraging for winter food he goes further away from his sett than normal, lured by the smell of fallen apples which he has a weakness for. On his way home he bumps into a pheasant who informs him all the inhabitants of Badgers Wood are about to lose their homes as the land is about to be developed for housing.
Distracted and upset by this news Itchy falls into a disused well which he struggles to get out of. Greatly distressed and crying out for help he hears a noise which at first he thinks could be members of a badgers cull (Uples) out to shoot him. Trapped and alone he is rescued by a large mouse, Enormouse, (Norm) who becomes his friend.
On discussing the developer’s plans with the rest of the woodland animals Itchy, Matty and Norm decide to save their friends homes.
Their journey takes them through the countryside in search of treasure to place in the fields around Badgers Wood so it won’t be built on.
Matty nearly drowns but is saved by geese and the trio nearly get caught when raiding a garden for food. They discover to their delight an aunt who vanished some years before who tells them about gold at the end of the rainbow which they find at the base of a ravine.
Trapped on hearing Uples voices above, again they are worried it is the cull;
they must escape with the gold to save Badger Wood
