Description
The cardiac effects of overweight in children are largely unknown. The objectives were to evaluate cardiac findings in overweight children and determine changes following weight loss. Methods: Overweight youth (≤ 19 years old) were recruited. LV mass (LVM), geometry, systolic and diastolic function were assessed using echocardiography, and compared to controls. A subset undergoing bariatric surgery were evaluated before and after weight loss. Results: 159 children (BMI 39 ± 11.3 kg/m2) were compared to controls and demonstrated higher LVM index, abnormal LV geometry, increased systolic function, and altered diastolic function. In addition, in the 33 adolescents evaluated before and after bariatric surgery improvements were seen in: LVM index, LV geometry, and diastolic function following weight loss. Conclusions: Overweight children are at risk for cardiac abnormalities. These abnormalities may increase their risk for premature cardiovascular disease but could be reversed with significant weight loss. Long term follow up studies are needed.
